Change of Use
Architectural House Plans were asked to provide floor plans for a change of use project in Haverhill, Suffolk. The property was previously a retail store and the owner approached us to help them with planning their change of use project. The owners wanted to transform the property into a beauty salon and nail bar, which in architectural services is known as a Sui Generis Use Class as it doesn’t naturally fall into one particular business use of a building.
This means that a full planning permission application was made to the council to changing the use class from shop to a beauty salon. During this process, we designed and submitted a full set of planning drawings, a supporting Design and Access statement and a completed application form.
The majority of work for this change of use project was to perform a detailed survey of the property to obtain the floor plans. This property covered two floors, including a nail bar, pedicure area, store and staff room, and with a toilet and kitchen area upstairs.
Planning permission is required when the work that is being done to the property is deemed as ‘development’, set out in the section 55 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Development includes – structural alterations, rebulding, demolition in most cases. It also includes, change of use to land and buildings which this example was. Other developments can be engineering operations, groundworks, a subdivision of a building.
