Key Architectural Trends for Summer 2018

We like to keep an eye on the up and coming styles, and we’re sure you do too so we’ve put together out favourite architectural trends for summer 2018.

Eco Friendly

As a society, we are becoming increasingly aware of the impact that we as humans have on the environment and as a result, there has been a rise of new-build houses which are sustainable and eco-friendly. The idea is that you reduce the carbon footprint of your house when building, and using technology to lower the energy consumption required to run the house.

The most common materials used for eco-friendly houses are those made out of recycled materials such as plastics, glass, wood or metal and tend to be modelled on a very modern design.

Increased Outdoor Living

Over the years with the evolution of rooms into more of an open plan living there has been a decline in formal room settings in urban homes.

People are opening up their houses to be one flowing movement of room to room.  Outdoor living areas have slowly been creeping into that flow by opening up the partitions between the outside and inside areas of a home. Opening up a balcony, decking or patio into the living spaces of the home make it more relaxed and informal while still incorporating the sleek modern designs of today.

Garden trends have moved towards extending the living space feel, for example adding outdoor sofas rather than patio furniture and adding decorations such as mirrors and lighting to create more of an indoor feel.

Natural Lighting

Another architectural trend for summer 2018 is to open out the amount of natural light that is let into the home to increase the feel of air and space.

Natural light has been proven to contribute to our positivity and well being, as have plants and greenery. By expanding the light and the views from the outdoor areas, it helps to bring the fresh natural feel into living spaces in the greener months of the year.

Traditional vs. Modern

We have seen a lot in the industry of converting buildings with rich histories such as mills, rail stores and warehouses into modern industrial style houses. There is a certain beauty of creating something new out of something old, and that’s true in the architectural world too – it’s not just clean modern lines.
