How to Maximise Space in a Small Room

We understand the difficulties of small rooms you don’t really know what to do with due to the lack of space. Here are a few tips to help you maximise space in your smaller spaces.

Light colour pallets

Light colour pallets are perfect for making a room look larger. If you have an abundance of dark colours or dark patterns it can close the room in and make the walls quite imposing. Dark colours can be great for creating a cosy night-time feel but if you’d like to maximise space, we’d advise that you steer clear.

We recommend picking a light colour scheme and sticking with it through your paint choices, flooring and furniture.

Mirrors

It’s no secret that adding a mirror can give the illusion of a larger room, so it’s definitely worth adding large mirrors to walls that feel a little close, such as a downstairs toilet or a snug. Another option is incorporating mirrors with storage, like a fitted wardrobe with mirrored sliding doors .

Don’t place your furniture against walls

By placing furniture against the wall you cause a small block of space to be focused in the middle of the room. If anything this makes a room look smaller. By placing furniture like sofas, armchairs and coffee tables away from walls with space around them gives the illusion that the room is more spacious.

Natural Light

We’ve mentioned it before, and we’ll mention it again. The more natural light that you can draw into a room, the more airy it will feel. This will maximise space much more than a dark room as it feels open and welcoming rather than oppressive. If you’re planning or remodelling your home, installing skylights can be a great option for letting in more light.

If you have a period home with smaller windows, try light- coloured blinds, lighting candles in windows on grey days and having lots of lamps in the room.

Furniture with raised legs

By placing chairs and sofas onto raised legs it gives the illusion of a larger, taller room. The more gaps and spaces you can see in a room for light to get through, the larger the room appears.

If you try some of these tips and tricks to maximise space and you’re still feeling a little cramped, there may be something that we can do to help. Whatever you’re planning for your home, we’d love to hear about it and advise you on how to achieve your end goal, so get in touch!
